Facts on Baltimore City College High School

Baltimore City College is the third-oldest public high school in the United States. Founded in 1839, it has produced many state and national leaders in business, medicine, science, sports, law, engineering, the arts and politics – including a Nobel Laureate and three U.S. congressmen. Baltimore City College teaches grades 9-12 and enrolls 1,430 students; their selection is based on test scores. Due to varied academic support programs, the annual rate of students leaving City for academic reasons is less than 3%. The annual graduation rate is 100%, the college admissions rate is 99%.
Cocurricular activities play an important role in the school. The choir is world class, the speech and debate program won the 2002 and 2003 Chesapeake Region top program designation, and the City Knights are perennial state play-off contenders in football, swimming, women´s lacrosse, and soccer. The spirit of City is captured on a T-shirt that City supporters cherish. On the front of the shirt is one word, “City”, and the back of the shirt reads, “Enough Said”.
Palmam qui meruit ferat, or “Honor to one who earns it”, is an appropriate motto for the school because it epitomizes teachers´ and students´ attitudes toward work and achievement that permeate the school.
In 2000, Baltimore City College was chosen as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. In 2003, Newsweek Magazine named Baltimore City College as one of its “Top High Schools” in the United States.
